Trail Running and Other Insane Notions. . .

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.

It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Yeah, yeah. Whatever, more like sloths, heehee. . . run with me.

"The only reason I take up jogging is so that I can hear heavy breathing every morning."  Badum-ching. Ooooh.
"Running is real and relatively simple. . . but it ain't easy, and you're pretty much as dumb as a weed blowing in the wind."

"Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired - morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired. When you were younger the mind could make you dance all night, and the body would never tire. You've got to make the mind take over and keep going." Patton said this, but personally I think drinking tequila has about the same effect.

"No doubt a brain and some shoes are essential for running success, although if it comes down to a choice, pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with no brains than with no shoes."

Okay, so now you know some of the weirdness a trail runner goes through, or at least now you know some wierd quotes.  I hate running and I love it; I hate being stiff the next day, yet I love it so, so much.

We runners are a breed apart; part monkey, part Bigfoot, part wild boar, and part Indian.  Running has kept me sane and relatively insane for all these years.  Anyway, have fun at least being in the woods.

Love,
Mirabal

Your comment about training the mind to control the body is right on. I'm not a trail runner, but I am a teacher. I hit the floor running at 5:30 am. The alarm sounds and the only thing that gets my body moving is my mind... "Don't be late!" The marathon begins, rituals and routines are shortened & occasionally I find myself driving in the dark until I'm graced by father sun.
As a teacher, you gotta put your kids first. It's the law! If you gotta pee, you hold it, the mind grasps a hold of your body, shakes you to your core and the freedom is when the one kid that annoys you the most, confides in you.
One class links into the next.
15 minutes to rest, breathe & eat lunch, then back again until the bell rings.
It's a trip... A real journey, one I still feel humbles you daily.
This calling for now is my own personal marathon...
Your physical runs revive & awaken your spirit, I will think of your trails and commune with you from a far brother wind.

Ran for most of my youth till my twenties. Running again in my forties....harder. It is a love hate relationship. I tried running with a ball the other day, in the woods...lol. Did pretty good till I hit the ground and kissed mother earth. LOL. A humbling experience. Still running.

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to hearing more. Lucy B.

Got two love/hate activities goin on. One is swimming laps. Used to do a mile several times a week but since cancer have only rebuilt to 1/2 mile. Love the water - hate the cold when you get out.

Next is singing solos. Love to be able to express the emotion of the music but hate the nerves before performing and the fear of messing up. Run, Robert, Run!
